The Jolly Roger Flies Again: BSides Tampa

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of presenting my Rellik Project once again. This time at the Security Bsides event in Tampa FL. Hosted by the (ISC)2. The topic of Botnets has been very popular and my audience was very involved. It was a fantastic day all around.

If you are coming here after attending my talk, or participating in the El Zorro beacon hunt, thank you! You made the event more fun and memorable than we could have hoped for.

For those of you that were unable to attend: The El Zorro Beacon Hunt was an educational game run during the conference. It featured  a fictitious hacker, named El Zorro, attacking a corporate intranet. The hacker placed a Rogue Access Point somewhere within the conference. Contestants used Wifi Signal Analysis to hunt the beacon down. The prize was an Arduino Yun, an ESP8266, and accessories needed to build a copy of the Rogue Access Point.
The winner found the beacon in just under 4 hours. He used, by his own account: "Nothing more than my phone and some social-engineering". Congratulations Jesus M., you earned your prize.

This was my first time running a contest and I learned a lot about organizing something of that scale. We had far more participation than I could have even hoped for! I am already looking forward to my next opportunity to run this contest.

If you are looking for the Slides for my talk they will be available from the (ISC)2 Tampa chapter along with the rest of the conference material. The code is available on Github already: https://github.com/dreilly369/rellik-cnc-examples
